INTRODUCTION TO POSTGRADUATE STUDIES IN HCMUT

Our Postgraduate Programs’ Key Facts

Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT), a member of Vietnam National University - HCMC, is one of the leading universities of Vietnam in engineering and management, with around 24.000 undergraduate and 4.000 postgraduate students, playing a significant role in providing well-educated labor force for Vietnam and Indochina. The university includes 11 faculties and 2 campuses, one is located in the inner of Ho Chi Minh City and another in Binh Duong Province.

Beside undergraduate education, postgraduate education has been one of the key strategies of HCMUT, which focuses on training scientific experts, for the purpose of improving long-term technological developments in Vietnam. The postgraduate education of HCMUT has been continuously innovated with respect to research-based contents, curricula, and education environment as well as teaching methods.


Master’s Education

Currently, HCMUT offers 39 disciplines of Master’s level with annually enrollment of approximately 1.500 students. All the programs are designed into two categories, which are research-based and coursework-based.

In order to attend the programs, all candidates must pass the entry examinations biannually organized. Besides, the English entry requirement for the programs is equivalent to B1 in CEFRL.

The duration for the Master’s study varies from 1,5 to 2 years, which is equivalent to 45 to 60 credits, depending on the programs obtained at undergraduate levels. In order to hold the Master’s degrees, students must attain the compulsory coursework-based or research-based subjects plus the respective successfully-defended theses.

Specific Curricula of the Master’s Education

To the researched-based Master’s programs, the number of 5 credits for general subjects (Philosophy, Advanced Scientific Research Method), 10 elective credits and 30 credits of thesis and publication is required.

To the course-based Master’s programs, the number of 5 credits for general subjects (Philosophy, Scientific Research Method), 12 credits of core subjects and 13 credits of elective subjects plus 15 credits of thesis is required.

Doctoral Education

Currently, HCMUT offers 30 disciplines for Doctoral level or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) level. The candidates who wish to be PhD students of HCMUT must pass the entry examinations biannually organized plus the English requirements equivalent to B2 in CEFRL.

In order to complete the PhD programs, students must finish theses with minimum duration of 3 full-time years. Additionally, these theses must be successfully defended in front of the Examination Committees.

Fostering doing research within the postgraduate studies

HCMUT has established a program in order to foster research activities within the postgraduate environment. Specifically, the program has created, sponsoring postgraduate students through research projects.

In addition, in order to increase the publications conducted by postgraduate activities, HCMUT has established a program which has awarded students who have published during their postgraduate studies.

Academic Staff

Academic staff who hold PhD degrees are qualified for participating in the training activities of postgraduate studies within HCMUT. Their responsibilities are lecturing, supervising the students doing research, etc.
